Glad you enjoyed chaps

Have some cracking ones lined up that I dug out of their archives. Will post one every two days or so.

The anonymous player is most probably Carlton Cole, who wasn't exactly complimentary about Grant, even when he was there.

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
IT still utterly baffles me how you can make it as a professional footballer, be earning a salary of tens of thousands of pounds per week, and not do the basics like turn up for training on time.

Shambles of a season that one. Whilst we had a reasonable set of midfielders the defence was probably the least organised that I can remember us having in all my years of being a supporter.

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
A really interesting read. What a shambles. I knew it was bad, but didn't realise it was THAT disorganised.

Had to laugh at the comments re Faux Pas at Arsenal. 'All Julien had to do was stay on the bench.'

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
The anonymous player can’t be Noble, as he said ‘that season at West Ham’ was tougher than retiring. So must have played for other clubs as well as being retired.

Was it you or Morley who gave th heads up to a few that he was going to be out next manager, Pee Wee?

I was a little late to place my bet so I didn't get as good odds as others but still made a bit out of him.

Dunno if I said thanks at the time, but thanks now if I didn't!

Cheers Eddie B

Knew it was bad, but reading that makes you realise just how incompetent our owners are.

Assuming the anonymous player is Noble. Not sure why else anyone would stay anonymous unless they were still at the club.

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
Good article.

Didn't Grant play Reid as RB out of position on his debut?

Joke of a manager. I do remember as being quite happy about his appointment. Chelsea guys I knew warned against him. Said he got them to the CL final despite him. The team was running by it's self and his subs in that final fucked up their chances.

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
Thats a really good insight as to how bad that season really was under Doctor Death. We all knew it was bad but to not know what formation you are meant to be playing whilst waiting in the tunnel is something else.

Any guesses about who the anonymous ex-player in the article is?

Gabidon? Upson?

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
Thanks Irish, we are getting good value from your Athletic subscription. Much appreciated.

Good article with few surprises. (Despicable Judas) Parker was immense that season and Grant should have been sacked at Christmas by a board that was even more inept than he was. Then you throw in all the journeyman players who we signed without any investigation into their character and you end up with that horrendous season.

What a shambles, yes no surprise.
Avram taking the piss and getting well paid for it.
But what about our owners, how? How can you own our club and be so incompetent to let this happen. And we still have them...

Nagel 9:33 Sun May 16
Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
Decent article. Should be required reading for any numpty who actually believes Roeder, Zola or anyone else to be the worst manager we ever had, when it was clearly Grant by a huge distance.

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
Nothing in this will surprise anyone.
Cant think of a worse season in living memory .... another GSB special.
It was often said that when he was Chelsea manager via his mate Roman that the players basically ran the team being focused and professional.
We lost our first 4 , were 20th on 28 August and apart from one bump up to 15th and were in the relegation zone for 34 of 38 games.

One game that stuck in my memory was Liverpool away (had to check ,it was in November) where we set out in an extraordinary formation that seemed to involve all the players in a central strip of the pitch with noone wide and full backs in the penalty area.
Liverpool (without Gerrard) strolled to 3-0 in 35 mins and can remember thinking the manager should have been sacked at half time.
The season was capped off by our 'captain' Upson refusing to play in the last game post relegation at home to Sunderland.

Poor journalism to call Franco a flop. One season wonder maybe. Scored more goals than a lot of the other pony we have signed over the years on similar deals.

Johnson 5:03 Sun May 16
Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
Uncle Avram was absolute dogshit no doubt and the board were their usual undermining, snidey, trying to get Martin O’Neill on the quiet then boasting about it and fucking it up, refusing to sack and more importantly pay Grant off, club killing cunt selves.

BUT there should have been enough in that squad to stay up. The players got to a semi and a quarter final despite the Baron Greenback cunt so surely they could have mustered enough to stay up.

They were pathetic at times that season, absolutely gutless.

Those stories doesn’t surprise me, what a unprofessional shambles West Ham have been from top to bottom.

Re: Memory Lane :- 2011 & Avram Grant
The Athletic tried repeatedly to contact Grant for comment but were unable to do so.

Well he was probably asleep as per in his office... some of the stories i heard about that joke of a manager...beggars belief
